The Leon Paul standard mask is rated as one of the best non-FIE masks on the market.  The mesh is coated with a durable layer of nylon which insulates it from your lamé jacket, making it suitable for electric foil. For beginners who think they are likely to progress on to electric foil the extra investment over the cost of a basic mask is well worth it in the long term.

Technical details:

The Spring Case : A section held on by a single rivet, the spring case is riveted to the back of the mesh reducing the chance of it failing or breaking after prolonged use and bending. This is particular useful when utilized in schools or junior fencing when it is likely that the spring case will be subjected to an high amount of bending and usage.


The Shell : For absolute comfort during usage it has a removable absorbent washable forhead pad (56). The mask is the only one available with an adjustable forhead pad. By repositioning the two velcro arms of the pad The face can be held at different distances from the inside of the mask shell. The wire mesh is the strongest possible non stainless steel wire which we can have woven but which we can still form and all the joints are welded using a continuous seam welding process for maximum strength. The mesh is hot tin dipped (not plated) giving a strong filet of tin at each wire interweave site. Over many years hot tin dipping of mask shells has been found to produced the strongest and longest life product. The Nylon coating is shrunk on to the mesh during the hot curing process. The nylon coating not only helps the strength of the mesh but due to its high strength and resilience does not chip when hit by an opponents point. (Some of the epoxy coatings have been found, when hit hard, to chip in a dangerous way causing small particles to become embedded in the eye.) The shape of the shell conforms to F.I.E. regulations with the front angle less than 130 degrees and the maximum possible depth of shell. The final touch is that the internal portion of the shell through which the fencer looks is sprayed after nylon coating with matt black paint to prevent internal reflections from the gloss surface of the black nylon coating somthing other companys fail to do.


The Bib : New 350 Newton outer bib material as used in our F.I.E. clothing. New thicker foam giving better protection and helps to hold the bib in the correct shape. New design shape bib to fit the body and prevent the bib from creasing. F.I.E. Style flank protection, which is achieved by stitching double thickness 350 Newton side flapsat the join with the mask shell, which means there is no weak points at the bib to mask shell boundary. The internal cloth is water proof with the P.U. coating on the inside of the lining keeping the cloth in contact with the skin as soft as possible. We have always made our linings waterproof for two main reasons:

1. In hot climates it prevents sweat causing the mask bib to short to the lame, which results in off target hits registering valid when the bib is hit.

2. If the lining is absorbent the sweat it absorbs makes the bib smell very quickly. Our mask can simply be wiped down after use and can even be cleaned occasionally with a mild disinfectant solution to keep it clean and fresh.
