Rapier generally refers to a relatively long-bladed sword characterized by a complex hilt which is constructed to provide protection for the hand wielding it. While the blade might be broad enough to cut to some degree, the strength of the rapier is its ability as a thrusting weapon. The blade might be sharpened along its entire length, sharpened only from the center to the tip (as described by Capoferro), or completely without a cutting edge as called "estoc" by Pallavicini, a rapier master who, in 1670 strongly advocated using a weapon with two cutting edges. A typical example would have a relatively long and slender blade of 2.5 centimetres or less in width, 1 meter or more in length and ending in a sharply pointed tip.

Swept Hilt Rapiers trace their origins to early 17th century Europe, where swordplay with the Rapier was considered an essential part of a gentleman's education and was often used in resolving gentlemanly disagreements.	This rapier features a high-carbon steel blade and a very attractive solid steel (not plated) basket with a genuine bone grip. A rigid leather-covered scabbard is included. Either of our rapier belts are ideally suited to this rapier.	Our Practical Rapier utilizes a highly popular hilt, modified to accomodate our SCA-approved 37" Schlager blade. The tapered blade form provides superior balance compared to the traditional parallel-sided schlagers of the same length, making for a faster sword. The high-carbon steel blade provides good flexibility and is button-tipped for safety.

Long extolled as the pinnacle of rapier design, the �Spanish� or �Cup-Hilt� rapier undoubtedly combined style and function very effectively in 17th century Europe. The very best of these weapons featured beautifully pierced cups and pommels and CAS/Hanwei has replicated these to perfection and combined them with an elegantly tapered high-carbon steel blade in our �Taza� rapier (the name comes from the French, who called this style �a la Taza�). A leather-covered scabbard is included. The matching Main Gauche again features a pierced guard and pommel in the same design as the rapier, with a fileworked blade in the Spanish style. A leather scabbard and belt frog are included.	Fencing in the Renaissance style plays a prominent part in historical re-enactment, combining the quickness of light blades with the structure and spirit of the duel.	The 6-loop Belt Frog allows the rapier scabbard to be hung from a standard waist belt.

The Rapier Scabbard is for use with our Fencing Rapiers.	Practical Sparring Rapier Blade. This 37 inch blade is made to replace any broken or bent sparring blades in the following rapiers: Solingen Rapier Torino Rapier Gustav Rapier	Based on models of 17 th century swept-hilt rapiers of Italian ancestry and combining the better features of several pieces, our Torino Rapier with matching main gauche (sold separately) is sure to become the standard by which all others are measured. The blades are made of forged high-carbon steel and are equipped with black leather scabbards. The guard has an ornate design with straight quillons to protect the hand and for wrapping the fingers around to increase functionality and one�s grip strength. This rapier and the matching main gauche blade produced from CAS/Hanwei are now interchangeable with the �Practical� blades, which are designed for safety in rapier sparring.
