Stripside Coaching: A Training Manual by Dr. John Heil and Paul Soter.
Stripside coaching refers generally to “game day” communications between coach and athlete in the competitive environment. Game day coaching is distinct from other coaching interventions in that it is uniquely influenced by the urgency of the moment and the enhanced emotional state of coach and athlete. The nature and manner of the communication will vary based on the specifics of the moment and the particular setting. Stripside coaching includes instruction provided before the start of a bout (or after), in the timeout or break period, during team competition – or in any moment where there is communication between coach and athlete.
The goal of this manual is to begin to fill the void in coaching training between lessons and general fencing to the tournament day coaching scenarios. The report is a collaborative effort between Dr. John Heil and Paul Soter who represent the respective disciplines of sport psychology and coaching pedagogy.
